Do not overlook the importance of the outside of your property - the exterior of your house is the first thing that visitors see on arrival and an attractive view of a garden or balcony can also transform the rooms inside.

Look after your garden
If you live in a city a garden is a bonus - you are considered lucky so whether you have an enormous garden or tiny patio, make the most of it. You don't need to bring in a landscape gardener (although no doubt it would look wonderful), just keep neat and tidy and well maintained - repair fences and walls and invest in colourful flowers in pots. If you are intending to sell the property, it will create a much more attractive and well cared for first impression.

Take care of the exterior of the property
Doors and windows can play an important part in the look of the building. They must blend in with the period of the property and cheap modern versions can put off potential buyers. Change to good reproductions where you can. If you have unattractive or pebble dashed wall, use ivy or wisteria to climb up. If the front of your house is painted a colour, opt for a neutral colour, rather than a pink or yellow - it may not be somebody else's favourite colour!

They are definitely worth the investment and you could reap twice what you paid for it when you come to sell. You are creating a distinctive feature as well as an extra room and a link between inside and out. Go for the best you can afford.

Garden furniture
When the sun comes out, your garden or patio comes into its own so it's worthwhile investing in some decent outside furniture and accessories to enjoy it to the maximum. Some furniture can be kept outside all year round, though some pieces eg barbeques, parasols, sun loungers and patio heaters, need to be stored inside - make sure you have enough space, or a garden shed to house them.
