Points to Consider

Before you embark here are some important points to consider:

Realise your budget
Moving into a new house or re-modelling an existing one involves the challenge of balancing your plans with an available budget. Whatever you have to spend, it is important to realise that your dream home will not materialise overnight. Firstly invest in the basics of the house - electric, heating, plumbing, building work - once finished you will be left with the shell of each room - ready for your plans and ideas - and a definite idea of how much you have to spend on it.

Plan your space
Then make a list of all the projects you would like to undertake for each room - large or small, practical or decorative, urgent or a daydream. Think about how you really want to use each room in terms or how you spend you time when there and how many people will use it. Realising your needs is the key to achieving a practical and easy to live with room layout.

Develop your style
Establishing your style can be a difficult task - not only is there a host of suggestions and advice on offer, but often it is hard to know what will work best in the space you have. Look through books and magazines for the look you want and also consider the age of the house or shape of a room. Remember style is a very personal thing - don't be afraid to mix periods, looks and colours - the most important thing is that you are happy with the end result.
